During these past few months as I travelled coast to coast by car in weather only a Canadian could enjoy, I have been fortunate enough to meet many incredible Canadians who graciously accepted to share their views and concerns with me. This experience has reinforced my desire to improve the lives of each and every Canadian. Throughout my campaign I have been an advocate for Liberal values. My enduring commitment to these values has led me make the decision to step down from the Liberal Leadership race. I will be forever touched and deeply grateful for the encouragement and contributions I have received throughout my campaign, Unfortunately I did not reach the critical mass of support I had hoped to achieve before going into the Montréal debate weekend. As I have said throughout this contest, we must all put the interests of our Party and Country first. I am more determined to rebuild and unify the Party, so it is with a heavy heart that I have decided to step aside so that our party and country can focus on the issues and the remaining candidates. I chose to run in order to draw attention to the need for developing strong policy and reform ideas for the Liberal Party of Canada and our country. Given the attention and focus of support it appears that removing my candidacy from contention is in the best interest of the Liberal Party of Canada. I still maintain today that there is no monopoly on good ideas and we must strive to work with all levels of government and all political parties once elected for the greater good of our great country and Canadians.. Though I will no longer be a candidate in this race I remain undaunted in my commitment to the Liberal Party and its values. I remain focused on rebuilding the party and in reinforcing our capacity to represent all Canadians thought my policy initiatives including, Liberal Party 2.0, PharmaCare, CanadAid, Muscular Peacekeeping, investing in all Canadians by providing the climate for them and SME’s to reach their full potential, fair trade and respect for Aboriginal peoples and the environment. I have believed in this party for thirty years, and I intend to continue pushing for modernisation, grassroots engagement, and sound, evidence-based policy. I would like to thank the countless individuals who have stood behind me and lent me their support throughout my travels. To my supporters and my family and the dedicated team who helped me accomplish so much – I thank you all. I would also like to thank the many Canadians for their investment of time, ideas and money all of which have been invaluable. While leadership is sometimes defined by rising up to a significant challenge, I believe that in these circumstances, true leadership is about making the right decision. You can continue to visit my web site at www.davidbertschi.ca to review my policies, speeches, commentary and to assist in reducing leadership related debt for which you will receive a tax credit.

OurWindsor.Ca by Jonathon Liedtke David Bertschi wants to be the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and hopefully the next Prime Minister. Having run in the 2011 federal election, Bertschi made a name for himself running in the riding of Ottawa-Orléans. While he lost to his Conservative opponent by a few percentage points, he achieved the fifth highest amount of Liberal votes in the country and as such increased the party’s popular vote from the prior election. Both a lawyer and businessman, Bertschi has been travelling by car across the country meeting and listening to Canadians from all political stripes. “You don’t drive across the country … unless you’re serious … I’m in this to rebuild the party.” What he’s been hearing from liberals regarding the leadership is that they’re “concerned about [candidates] having substance, experience, and providing them with a real alternative to the current government.” When asked what sets him apart from the current leadership candidates, Bertschi responded “Experience. Having run, owned built and rebuilt small businesses and having been involved in politics as a volunteer, but never beholden to special interests and the party establishment.” “It’s very difficult for people to rebuild if they’re tied to or beholden to others.” explained Bertschi. Having been able to both find a job in his own field and purchase a house five years out of law school are memories of a past generation which Bertschi fears are “eroding” from the current generation. Today students who want to work hard [and] who have the capacity to do well, can’t afford a house.” Concerned that Canada’s political polarized is expanding, Bertschi is worried that polarization isn’t healthy for the “economy, students … small and medium sized businesses and the middle class [as a whole].” Critical of what he considers to be top-down policies that plague the Liberal Party’s past, Bertchi feels there is a need to rebuild the party and reconnect with liberals to talk “about not only a vision of our country, but also how to implement realistic programs … which is what the liberal party historically has been able to do. We’ve got to forget the top-down policies [and] listen to Canadians [and] act. Bertschi is also concerned about the erosion of parliamentary democracy and the believes there to be a need for an increase in respect of democracy overall. He’d like to see members of parliament both actively represent community in parliament and refuse to act as talking heads. “A lot more free votes are needed [and] committee work has to be meaningful.” “When you talk about a code of conduct in parliament, I believe in a code of conduct. they say they’re professionals, but a lot of them don’t act professionally … we expect far [better behaviour] of our children and grandchildren than we do of our politicians … that’s part and parcel why our institutions are not looked up with respect.” http://www.ourwindsor.ca/news-story/2075014-exclusive-interview-with-federal-liberal-leadership-candidate-david-bertschi/

The post Exclusive interview with Federal Liberal leadership candidate David Bertschi appeared first on David Bertschi - Join the Conversation | Liberal Party Canada.

David Bertschi wants to be the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and hopefully the next Prime Minister.

“You don’t drive across the country … unless you’re serious … I’m in this to rebuild the party.”

What he’s been hearing from liberals regarding the leadership is that they’re “concerned about [candidates] having substance, experience, and providing them with a real alternative to the current government.”

When asked what sets him apart from the current leadership candidates, Bertschi responded “Experience. Having run, owned built and rebuilt small businesses and having been involved in politics as a volunteer, but never beholden to special interests and the party establishment.”

“It’s very difficult for people to rebuild if they’re tied to or beholden to others.” explained Bertschi.

Concerned that Canada’s political polarized is expanding, Bertschi is worried that polarization isn’t healthy for the “economy, students … small and medium sized businesses and the middle class [as a whole].”
